The Massachusetts Spearfishing Open

Launch is from the shore near ramp on west (left when driving out) of parking lot. Please note parking is limited and it is advised you arrive early to secure available parking within easy walking distance to launch site. Google (Gooseberry Neck, Westport, Ma) for overview and directions.
 
Fish: All fish will be 2 inches over the MA State DMF regulations minimum size. Bags limits will follow current MA STATE DMF and / or Federal regulations. Fish not governed by a minimum size shall be at least 12 inches in total length. Size and bags limits will be based on 2014 MA State DMF regulations.
 
Rules: Tournament rules will conform to the Underwater Society of America's (USOA) requirements for rules pertaining to the National Skindiving Championships. Specific rules that will be best suited for this particular location and based on current State DEM regulations are forthcoming. Judges, referees and officials will be selected with the care and respect that this National Championship deserve. USOA rules are linked here - USOA
 
Scoring: One point is awarded per fish and per pound. The maximum weight to count toward scoring is 15 pounds. Therefore the maximum points per one fish are 16 points.
 
Equipment: This tournament will be a paddleboard (kayak) tournament with only muscle-powered transportation being allowed. A diver's flag (12" x 12" minimum) and a personal USCG approved floatation device are required by State Law. A dive knife is also required. We suggest a 5 mm or 7 mm wetsuit. Belt stringers are permitted and popular with local divers. 55 cm to 110 cm guns are generally used with 90 cm being the most common. Spearguns are permitted in the tournament area. GPS is allowed. 
 
Travel Time: No travel time for this tournament.
 
Tournament Time: 9:00 a.m. till 2:00 p.m. Divers must be back at the beach, at least standing in the water at 1:59:59 p.m. or will be disqualified.  
 
Check-in time is 8:00 a.m. so please show up early enough if you have to sign a waiver or wish to become a club member.
 
Mandatory Divers/Competitors Meeting at 8:45 on beach at launch area to cover rules and boundaries.   
 
Scouting: No fishing for non pelagic species within the tournament area for 14 days prior to the meet. No pre-scouting the morning before the meet.
 
Boundary Description: Gooseberry Neck: To the far west at Quicksand point, then southeast down to the G "1" (FI G 2.5s) buoy. Then back northeast to the tip of Barneys Joy Pt.

The Mass Open is the second of 4 OPEN Tournaments scheduled as part of the North Atlantic Championships for 2014. Competitors must be a member of one of the 4 North Atlantic Spearfishing Clubs to compete.
