Annie Nagel

I was born and raised in Sonoma County, California. Growing up, I was an adventure seeking, risk-taking, competitive little girl. I’ve been in love with water and nature all my life and have spent a lot of time in the great outdoors. I started fishing 7 years ago when I met my boyfriend. I was instantly hooked and fishing seemed to come naturally to me. Fishing from shores and jetties evolved into fishing from a float tube, which, eventually, evolved into fishing from a cheap 8-foot kayak in 2011.  That kayak allowed me to get out into lakes and inlets, but I yearned for more. In 2013 I got a used 12-foot kayak and that’s when the real fun began. I was able to go out in the ocean, which is undeniably my favorite body of water to fish. Now I use an Ocean Kayak Trident 13 and fish every opportunity I get.

My favorite species to target are lingcod, cabezon, and big rockfish! When the ocean is rough I enjoy targeting Halibut in bays, fishing rivers for steelhead and salmon, and occasionally lakes for bass and trout. I am very fortunate to live in Northern California because there are tons of great and beautiful places to fish and so many species to target. I recently started competing in kayak fishing tournaments and meeting lots of other kayak anglers on a forum called Nor Cal Kayak Anglers. NCKA is full of amazing, knowledgeable, and passionate fishermen, and I am so happy and grateful to be apart of this incredible community.

So, what’s my favorite thing about kayak fishing? I love that every trip is a new and unique experience and you never know what to expect. I find it to be very therapeutic despite the chaos that ensues when you get a fish. There truly is never a dull moment when out on the water. Kayak fishing empowers me as a woman and gives me the opportunity to be completely self-reliant and independent. I am constantly learning new things and reaching new heights. I hope to inspire and encourage kids and other girls to get out in nature and follow their passions. When I’m not fishing, some of my favorite activities include free diving from my kayak, snowboarding, stand-up paddle boarding, surfing, and spending time with my dogs. I think the most important thing in life is to live each day to the fullest and do what you love.
