Cliff Johnson

I have grown up with fishing and hunting around me my whole life, and really got serious into the kayak fishing scene around five years ago. Living in the Houston area, I have access to great fishing oppurtunities in both fresh and saltwater, and fish both types on a regular basis, but my favorite type of kayak fishing is chasing pelagics offshore in the Gulf of Mexico. I got involved in the offshore scene four years ago, and have been hooked ever since. However, I still fish the bays and marshes targeting inshore species on a regular basis, as well as chasing catfish, gar, and white bass on our local lakes and rivers.

In addition to fishing, I enjoy doing kayak and canoe camping trips. Some of these trips are more fishing oriented, and some are more oriented towards covering a lot of ground and just exploring. The amount of wildlife and scenic views you can see while paddling in some of our more remote areas is amazing, and kayaks are a perfect tool to get out there and propel you on those adventures.

I paddle the Ocean Kayak Ultra 4.3 model most frequently, and it is my prefereed boat 90% of the time. The huge tankwell allows me to keep my catch after I've landed some large offshore fish, or store a lot of gear when I'm doing camping trips. I also own several other models of boats, such as the Caper, Frenzy, and Old Town Rogue River. I enjoy all of these models and use them all pretty regularly.

Almost all of my spare time these days is spent on the water in some type of paddle craft, whether I’m fishing, duck hunting, camping, or doing anything else on the water. My kayak is a great tool to just get out there and explore. I hope to get more people involved in the sport, with hopes that kayaking will have as positive of an impact on others lifestyles as it has on mine.

I am currently a college student majoring Agriculture, and plan on becoming a Wildlife Biologist.
