About Mike: I started as an outdoorsman at an early age. My earliest memories are of riding with Grandpa on his tractor in his apple orchards. He raised sheep and alfalfa just off the Rio Grande outside of Albuquerque, New Mexico and he taught us where our food came from, the value of our land and animals as well as a respect for mother nature. We did our daily chores and hunted and fished that river and the irrigation ditches to our heart content. I did a 6 year stint as a Navy Gunners Mate, then 21 years as a Firefighter/EMT and Rescue Instructor, and Ski Patroller, then moved to Central Texas and learned to fish the bigger waters.
Now I find myself with a good knowledge of fresh water fishing from a kayak, decent water skills, access to waters in the Highland Lakes that I know well and I'm blessed to be around a group of kindred spirits that understand my lifestyle.
I am also involved in keeping my local community (Kayak Only) Brushy Creek lake safe and thriving. I am working with the Director of Parks and Recreation so I have 2 cleanup days scheduled this summer and I have drawn in an Eagle scout to assist with a re-design of the kayak ramp area. I am working on a Friends of the lake concept, A take kids fishing tournament and we have worked with Texas Parks and Wildlife to have the lake tested, fish counted and a stocking program initiated. I'm trying to instill that respect for mother nature and the lifestyle of the outdoors.
