Not wanting the first trip out to be a bust, me and my good friend Chuck thought long and hard about where to fish, and what to fish for. We decided that we would target northern pike in the Belgrade Lakes region of Maine. We got on the water around 8am anticipating cool temps, but to our surprise it was on the warm side. I had several lures that I wanted to try, but being so early in the season, many of them would have been too aggressive. With water temps still quite low I knew the fish would be sluggish so I opted to go with my signature series Whisperer lure from Daddy Mac Lures. We paddled out to where we decided to begin and on the first cast I caught one of the biggest fish of the day, a roughly 5 pound northern. My total for the day was four fish landed, two fish lost, and two fish missed. The fish were hovering along breaks and relating to structure in 3' - 4' of water. We were off the water by 1pm and headed home with smiles. Not a bad way to kick off the season.
