This was about my 4th trip targeting false albacore this season and I just could not land one. I had a couple hooked during prior trips but they all managed to throw the hook. I was getting to the point where I was losing my confidence and almost gave up on catching any false albacore for the season. I decided to try a normally high percentage spot where other anglers were having success the last couple days. When I arrived the Albies were not showing so I had very little confidence. However, I knew they had to be here so I just started blind casting. If I had no luck in a certain spot I would move and start casting in another area. Then it finally happened....A False Albacore blew up on my zoom fluke. That first hook up was AWESOME! The fish nearly took all the line off my Shimano Spheros 4000. When I got that fish in the kayak I felt so relieved, FINALLY! I actually managed to catch three total that day in addition to many bluefish. All fish were successfully released. All fish were caught on a zoom fluke with a 3/8 oz jig head.
I learned a valuable lesson that day. Have confidence in your abilities and keep doing what you know. Eventually you will find the fish you are looking for.
